The Voice You Know, Now With a Face to Match*
For seven years now (seven!), my working life has been mostly voice: scripts, waveforms, and the quiet, cosy vibes of my home studio. As an Australian voice actor, I’ve had the privilege of being the “invisible” storyteller for brands, authors, businesses large and small, and so many characters – working from my lil town of Woodstock, NSW, with clients and audiences all over the world.
But over the last year, I’ve been up to something…
While the voiceover home studio has been booked and busy, the last nine months or so have seen me also stepping out into (gasp!) the real world, and in front of the camera again. I’ve officially expanded my career into screen acting, and the transition has been an invigorating and exciting challenge (but not a hard challenge, because jeez louise do I love it!)
Why the jump to screen?
Well, between you and me… screen acting is what I’ve always
wanted to do. It’s the big dream. And I’ve finally figured out that voiceover and screen acting are not worlds apart. In reality, they are two sides of the same coin. In fact, heaps of screen and stage actors do voiceover on the side as an extra income stream. Seven years of VO, with excellent coaches and supportive, gorgeous clients, has taught me how to take direction with openness and versatility, how to find the nuance in a single line, and how to deliver a performance that feels authentic, even when I’m standing in a little padded room all by myself.
It sounds a teensy bit ridiculous, but getting back on set with other actors, happy busy crew members and a camera feels like home. Like… the best place to be! So far I’ve worked on corporate training videos, commercial promo and a TV series shoot, and I’m finding that the precision and professionalism required in the VO booth translates beautifully to working on camera.
(Not to mention… all that training I did for my BCA in Drama a couple of decades ago!)
Business as usual (with a tad more travel!)
My home studio in Woodstock is still fully operational. I am still delivering high-quality, professional audio with the same fast turnaround you’ve come to expect. In fact the latter part of 2025 has been my busiest and most successful time in VO – I think the universe has been locking in to my new enthusiastic energy and everything’s aligning!
Living in a small country town, I wasn’t sure I could make the acting dream come true. However, being centrally located a few hours from both Sydney and Canberra has become a new kind of flexibility superpower. I’ve found a rhythm that works: one day I’m recording a national campaign from my quiet regional sanctuary, and the next, I’m on a highway heading to a casting or a set in the city. I actually love the adventure.
My big home studio space is also perfect for UGC video creation and my work as a digital spokesperson for lots of fab new brands. I’m super excited about how many ways there are to expand my skillset and do more fun, engaging work for Aussie and overseas businesses.
